Reading Endorsement - Competency 4/5

Foundations and Applications of Differentiated Instruction

In this course, teachers will have a broad knowledge of students from different profiles in order to understand and apply research-based instructional practices by differentiating process, product, and context. Teachers will engage in the systematic problem solving process: use data to accurately identify problems, analyze those problems, design and implement interventions, and intensify instruction based on individual student needs.

  1. -I try to meet the learning needs of my students by using current assessment data available to plan instruction. If data is not available, I use a form of assessment of my own. Based on the results I have, I then plan lessons which challenge the students to learn at a level slightly higher than the one at which they are.
-For students who struggle to learn, I use strategies to pump up their gains such as pairing them with more advanced students, or providing them with more simplified variations of the content being taught thus giving that extra step they need to climb. If the student is a fast learner, I give him or her more challenging activities when they are working individually or with peers who perform at the same level at which they perform.
-I address different learning profiles and interests by providing different types of activitities which require students to learn in a variety of ways. E.g. using memory, using analysis, using their auditory capacity, and using their tactile and artistic skills, among others. To address different learning interests, in addition to following the course curriculum, I combine class activities, assignments and assessments to activities or content the students are interested in.
-Student groupings are varied depending on students's learning ability, knowledge of a particular language component, personality, dependability and interests.
-I would like to know how to make instruction more varied and efficient when the time assigned for instruction is very limited and the content to cover is vast.
